so you had a bad day

I think it can safely be said that all of us have bad days from time to time. Maybe you have something going on in your personal life, or maybe work is getting you down. I have been struggling with a bit with the second part, with what seems to be a string (month?) of hard days, including juggling the stressors of constant patient demands, patient encounters and charting, cumbersome paperwork, a never-ending results inbox, some all-nighters, unsatisfying deliveries, and an erratic schedule. I don't think the constant rain for the past week has helped, nor has a new cough/URI on top of it all.

I definitely have felt the hallmark signs of burnout, quoted by this NYT article, to include "emotional exhaustion, detachment and a low sense of accomplishment." I have been struggling with whether or how to "get a better attitude" versus working on changing my current situation(s)/schedule; I was reminded of a post I wrote a few years ago, Proactivity vs. Serenity, where I discuss this ongoing internal battle of mine. In residency, it seemed expected to be burned out from time to time, and we had others around us to lean on who were going through the same thing. As a practicing doc, I thought things would get a whole lot easier. They have been, at times. But, at others, they are certainly not.

In any case, I hope this current "downer" spell is not indefinite. If you need a pick-me-up, as I have, you have to check out this link (with lots of hilarious videos) entitled, "19 People Who Are Having A Way Worse Day Than You." I guarantee that you will be rolling with laughter. And your day will be immediately better. Enjoy.
