It was our friend Cila's birthday on Friday and Kelvin and I joined a rare adults-only night out at a Japanese (teppanyaki) restaurant in Eureka (Cila is also a new mom with a ~six-week-old and I was proud of her for claiming her adulting space! Arranging childcare always seems so overwhelming for us but it's getting easier, and we feel less bad relying on our other parent friends sometimes). Iver was thrilled to hang out with Hudson at Shannon's house (Niall went along with it but was less excited as there weren't littler kids there) and, although the kids stayed up very late (almost 11) as the group dinner was quite late, it was worth it!

Winter (Non) Performance
Iver had a winter performance for his school which was scheduled in December, but which got postponed for reasons I cannot recall. We were able to attend on Wednesday at his school's auditorium. Each of the grades (K-5) had their own musical number (there was percussion, singing, story-telling, ribbon-waving, ukeleles, some violin-playing and more ["HOW MANY MORE ARE THERE?! I'M HUNGRY!" shouted our soon-to-be-kindergartener, Niall]). Iver looked out at the audience and was happy to spot us when he walked onstage for his second grade number.
However, by the end of the program (an all-school song), he was obviously over the participation!

Happy Lunar New Year (from someone not Asian enough!)
It was the start of Lunar New Year (or Tết, pronounced "Thet," for the Vietnamese) on Sunday. I have blogged previously about the holiday and customs, which mean a lot to my in-laws, in past years. However, we didn't really do anything local to celebrate. I was on call and had a busy weekend delivering lots of babies wanting to be born in the "Year of the Rabbit." Then I saw our (Vietnamese) friend Mai's FB post wishing everyone a "Happy Year of the Cat" and I was really confused (I didn't feel so bad after I consulted with my full-blooded Vietnamese spouse).

When there's no snow
We had our snowy trip to Sunriver for New Year's. We were hoping to have some snow for the kids this past weekend in the Mt. Shasta area but, alas, only got rain. Despite seeing it so rarely being a "coastal kid," Iver isn't overly in love with the snow or wintry activities. He doesn't seem to mind cold weather when dressed in waterproof, warm clothing (despite being a highly sensitive kid!). He didn't love snowshoeing. He does like ice skating. We haven't attempted skiing or snowboarding lessons. He does like sledding but didn't have great control with the saucer sled we brought to Sunriver so we purchased a more sleek "lightning sled" before this recent trip. The kids (with Kelvin) took it out to the coastal dunes to inaugurate it before the trip.

No Such Thing as "Bad Weather" (?)...
Unfortunately, rain and wind (an “atmospheric river,” I’ve learned) continued to pummel Northern California after weeks, and the weather looked abysmal. 100% rain all hours of the day with temperatures too warm for snow didn't look like the best "adventuring" weather.
Castle Crags State Park in Castella, just outside of Dunsmuir, is supposed to have great hiking and stunning mountain views none of which, alas, were visible in the day's downpour (so we'll have to go back sometime). The road up to Vista Point was also blocked off (?due to flooding?) so we could only hang out and play around the various creeks which were quite full.

Kelvin has to take Pepper back to Medford at the end of the month for (we think?) the last of her post-op appointments. While we know our state needs rain, with hope, our skies (and Pep's eyes) will stay clear for a while!
