We yet to make it to Big Lagoon this year (we did a family kayak morning last summer) but did on Saturday morning. We again rented kayaks from Kayak Trinidad and had two hours to paddle around the lagoon. It was a foggy, misty morning and rather cool for summer, but we bundled up to get out on the water. The kids wore their newly purchased life vests.
Iver (at six) was pretty helping in "grabbing an oar" and paddling, which was very helpful (more so than last year. I think Olympics-watching helped his motivation!). We swapped kids partway through.
Our friends, Sarah and Tito, also brought their family kayak (COVID purchase!) and joined us on the water with their kids...
... and took some photos of us.
In late June, there was an otter attack of a swimmer at Big Lagoon and a warning sign at the parking lot. Iver was surprisingly anxious about coming across one (even from a kayak), but we spotted one on our return paddle and we kept our distance (as did it).
More wildlife
We ate a packed lunch outdoors and the kids played a pretend game involving "werewolves" and fake-kayaked.
It was a pleasant, sporty, and thankfully otter attack-free morning at Big Lagoon!
