Flynn Creek Circus

 

We haven't taken the kids to any public *events* in forever.  It's looking like this summer reopening and "reprieve" from the devastation of COVID-19 is pretty short-lived with the spread of Delta, with our highest local daily case count to date since the pandemic started on Friday.  We are lucky to have gotten in our summer vacation "travel" escape in early July when things seemed and were better under control.

Flynn Creek (traveling) Circus is based in Mendocino County south of us.  Kelvin and Iver attended one of their shows in Fortuna a few years ago but I'd never been to see them. We bought tickets for the outdoor (tented) event in Arcata and crossed our fingers that it would feel safe-(ish). Seating reservations (socially distanced benches) and masks were required, although because refreshments were offered, they weren't worn all the time (we're pretty stingy and don't usually buy food/drink at events like these but we indulged the kids because it was a special occasion as it had been so long and figured that the circus franchise also needed the extra proceeds).

The kids (and we) really enjoyed the show! The event was fairy tale-themed, and there were fairies, unicorns, and fun performances including by knife throwers, tightrope walkers, aerial dancers, trapezists, and gymnasts doing tricks involving hula hoops, as well as a lot of story-telling humor.

I think Niall had quite a bit of anxiety at seeing so many people in one public setting (after I would lower my mask to eat a bite of popcorn, he kept pulling my mask back up) but we all enjoyed ourselves and this was a little glimpse of what we remember to be *normal* life and entertainment.   We're glad we went, as may not have another chance anytime soon.
