On Monday, Mindy was able to take a day off work to join us for more Moscow-area sightseeing adventures!
We took the commuter train to Sergiyev Posad, a town east of Moscow that houses one of the holiest sites in Russia for the Orthodox religion, housing the monastery or "lavra" of St. Sergius.
Although it was difficult to figure out how to get to the monastery from the train station (only the gold onion dome in the distance clued us in!), it was cold (and despite the 10% rain prediction, we got sprinkled on!) and unfortunately, many of the buildings were under construction, it was still a pleasant trip.
Sergiyev Posad is also apparently the birth place of the Russian nesting doll (matryoshka).

Back in Moscow, we wandered around the Tsaritsyno Palace and grounds, which once belonged to Catherine the Great.
There were FABULOUS fountains!!!
We finished our day with dinner at one of Mindy's favorite places, a Georgian restaurant which served delicious fare, including shish kebab, spiced stews, and wine out of a horn!
They even provided blankets for patrons!
