Today (May 9 in Russia, May 8 in Western Europe, and even May 7 in some places?) is celebrated as "VE" (Victory in Europe) Day, when (in 1945) the Nazi Germans formally surrendered to the Allies in World War II (or "The Great Patriotic War," as it is known in Russia).
It's a pretty big deal (i.e. National Holiday) in Europe, at least in Russia. Schools and most businesses/museums are closed. There are lots of parades, ceremonies honoring veterans, and even fireworks.
We had visited Victory Park (Park Pobedy) in Moscow earlier in the week to see the decorations.

In St. Petersburg, the main strip in town, Nevsky Prospekt, was overrun by war vehicles including tanks, and pedestrian traffic was limited.
Let's hope there's never again a WWII!
