Iver's Four-Year Update

Our oldest child and "Solstice baby" is four years old!

He is probably about 29 lbs (well child check scheduled in January) and still small for his age, at probably 6-10% for weight, but has grown three inches in the last year per the marked wall in his room. He wears 2T-3T shirts/tops and 3T bottoms.

He has been on four continents (North America, South America, Asia, and Europe) by four!

He attends a preschool daycare five days per week (two days are 3/4 days).

He goes to bed between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., with a routine of bath or shower/two books and then two stories plus 10 min of cuddle time in the dark, and then periodic check-ins every 5-10 minutes until he's asleep (lately, he's enjoyed listening to Peter Rabbit on audio during this time).  He usually but not always sleeps through the night, but is still an early riser (up between 4:45-5:45 a.m. most days). Born at 6:15 a.m. on the dawn of the solstice after one of the longest nights of the year, he's certainly made our nights long and has always been a morning person!  He still has the toddler ok-to-wake alarm clock in his bedroom, can read the digital numbers, and knows we'd love him to stay in bed until "GREEN" at 6, but sometimes his bladder and bowels wake him sooner, and, while we still have him in a nighttime pull-up until he shows us multiple dry days, he requests parental help. He naps for 1-1.5 hours on about half of the days (at preschool but generally not at home).

He eats constantly. For breakfast, he eats raisin bread/bagels or cereal/oatmeal, and sometimes yogurt/fruit. He loves: pizza, quesadillas, carne asada and rice, noodles, spicy hotdogs, potstickers, "baby pho," as well as frozen peas, green beans, baby carrots, broccoli, and all fruits, particularly dried ones (raisins and grapefruit are his favorites).  He does enjoy sweets, and we let him choose two nights during the week to have dessert, rather than negotiating all the time. He seems to be hungry constantly, and we have to limit the constant snacking, or at present him with healthy choices.

He is bubbly and extroverted, and talks constantly.  He likes making up stories and has an excellent memory. He can write all letters, most of his friends' and family members' names, and read short words. He can use chopsticks and tie his shoes. He can do simple addition, subtraction, and multiplication.  He is really, really funny* (see conversations below). He is sensitive, intense, and passionate. He is a staunch negotiator, is very stubborn and opinionated, and thrives on routine, order, and rules.

He loves: books (current favorites are Mo Willems' Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs and Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit), stories, nursery rhymes, fairy tales, songs and singing, "arts and crafts" (drawing, writing, cutting/pasting, coloring), running and playing chase at the park or gymnastics gyms and bounce houses, swimming and hot tubs, building forts, and messing with his brother. He doesn't do much screen time, but is captivated by The Wizard of Oz, and has enjoyed the original Mary Poppins and Netflix's Peter Rabbit. He likes to wear jeans and shorts, but loves my leggings and asks to be able to wear some, as well as pants that he's outgrown, which he'll refer to as "capris-es." Papa (Kelvin) is his favorite person.

He wanted cake pops to bring to preschool for his fourth birthday, so I (out of my element) slaved away. It was a multi-day process which caused me much anxiety and they surely aren't pinterest-worthy; however, (I know because I tasted the severely deformed ones) they turned out okay. The things we do for love...

Opening some gifts (he'll always benefit from Christmas boxes and bags)

*Friday Four-Year-Old Funnies

Iver has been very into writing lately.  One day, I noticed an "Iver" written in pen on the Ikea table.
Me: Hey! Why is there an "Iver" written on this table? Writing should not go on furniture nor walls, just on paper. Do you know who did this?
Iver (with a totally straight face): Niall.

I also asked him why he was writing most letters in uppercase, while he uses a lowercase "r" i.e. IVEr or TArA.
He told me, "Lowercase Rs are just easier to write. That's why I do that."

I asked him if he wanted to come outisde into the yard with me to dump food scraps into the compost cone while Niall was napping one morning.
When outside, he (ever the rule-follower) stated, "You're breaking the law."
Me: What do you mean?
Iver: You're not allowed to leave the baby inside alone.

Kelvin and I were arguing about something and he told us, "Guys! Just let it go!"

Last weekend, it was pouring rain on Sunday and I told him that we should snuggle and watch a Christmas movie.
Iver: Like the EX-ist?
Me: Excuse me? What movie did you mean?
Iver: You know, that scary one.
Me: YOU MEAN THE EXORCIST??? (Don't worry. He has not seen this movie. But I think Kelvin had mentioned it. I have no idea why he could remember that). No, not that one. That's neither a kids' nor a Christmas movie. I was thinking more like "The Grinch."
Iver: "What's an exorcist, mommy?"

Celebrating- Flips for Four

Iver has gotten a bit of the short end of the stick with a winter solstice, pre-Christmas holiday birthday.  We haven't done any individual birthday parties for him in his short life, he not being aware at ages one and two (although we did a little group birthday at Judo Hut at two) and then spending last year's birthday + holidays at my parents' place in Virginia.

This year, he asked earnestly to have a birthday party at Flips for Kids, a gym in Eureka (where we've attended a couple of parties), and we obliged-- the event was yesterday.  He made the guest list, including some of his best preschool friends and the kids of some of our good parent friends. We requested no gifts (and meant it, suggesting just donations for the victims of the California Camp Fire, and people actually obliged!), and the party was a hit!  Flips for Kids does a great job-- the kids get to get tired out with an hour of staff-supervised free play on the various mats, beams, trampolines, and the foam pit, while we parents can chat some, and then we had a half hour for food and cupcakes in the adjacent room. We provided the food and utensils, but the staff there helped immensely with safety, flow, and clean-up, and we could just go home afterwards!

Niall's 10-month update

At 10 months, Niall:
- weighs close to 18 lbs (He was 17.5 lbs and in the 12% for weight at his 9-month well visit last month). He is in mostly 9-12 month clothing but he fits some 6-month outfits
- Has two dimples and two lower teeth (and all he wants for Christmas is his two front teeth which seem like they're coming soon).
- is still exclusively breastmilk-fed, drinking pumped milk at daycare and nursing at home (although, with recent sleeping through the night, he's dropped the 3 a.m. feeding).  He's a good solids-eater about 3x per day and loves to self-feed finger foods, so we are nearly off purees and onto ground-up versions of what we're eating. He loves yogurt, pasta, most fruits/veggies, and meats.
- is in cloth diapers during the day (with flushable liners) and size 3 overnight Huggies at night. He only had one constipated day without a BM when starting iron (as his hemoglobin was low at his well baby check), but is back to pooping multiple times per day, often first thing in the morning on the potty.
 - is doing great at the infant room at daycare, where he is adored by teachers and where, thankfully, the frequent fevers/illnesses have become less frequent. He has some stranger anxiety now but is overall very sweet, mellow, and cuddly.
- is an extremely fast crawler and very grabby. He pulls up, cruises, and loves to play/mess with Iver's artwork, toys, Pepper, and Pepper's water. He claps and points. He sometimes face plants and has his share of bruises and scratches as a result.
- sleeps in a crib in our room (while we've moved to the guest room, when we don't have guests, because we can't sleep through his half-awake moans and fussing).  For the past week, he has been sleeping through the night (as in 7-7:30 pm until 6 or 6:30 a.m.), falling asleep on his own within a few minutes of being put in his crib. He sleeps better than our almost 4-year-old (in the past and now)! He naps twice- usually around 9:30 or 10:00 for about an hour, and another afternoon nap around 2 p.m. We may move his crib into Iver's room soon, but are not sure how this will go (in term of either kid sleeping... wish us luck!).
- loves walks in the stroller or in the front-facing carrier, and baths (especially with big brother).  He smiles, laughs, giggles, and squeals a lot. He will say "ma ma ma," "da da da," and "ba ba ba." I thought I saw him sign "all done" after a meal once, but it may have been random arm-waving (we haven't been as good as signing to him as we were to Iver).

Here is what Iver was doing at 10 months.

We love you, little Happy Sleeper!

A Silent Night; HALLELUJAH!

Someone once told me or posted something saying that the second part of your (parenting) life starts when your child is able to get up without you, pour a bowl of cereal with milk, and entertain him- or herself until a reasonable hour. While this hasn't happened for us yet (our fridge shelves are too high), 12/12/18 is the date of the morning when Kelvin and I woke up at 6:05 (in the guest room), realizing that neither one of our children had been up or gotten up out of bed or needed us for about 11 hours, after going to bed between 7-8 p.m. the preceding night!

It was a first. While Iver often "sleeps through" the night, his early morning wakings (generally between 4:45 and 5:45) don't usually leave us feeling very rested when Niall was also night-waking (but now, as of last weekend, Niall is not!). Last night, both children slept through.

IT. FELT. A-MAZ-ING!! While Wednesday is my hardest *work* day, today felt like such a different day.  I felt rested. Healthy. Energized. Positive. Happy. Like the sun came out and this parenting thing was manageable. It has been a very long and hard ~four years.  I am optimistic (but cautiously so) that this will continue as a trend, but for now, I wanted to document this first (silent) night.

A pre-Christmas Miracle indeed!

Joy to the World!

Nail/ Fail

I have had a rough couple of weeks with what I blame on "mommy brain." I don't know if it's related to chronic sleep deprivation, stress, both, or other, but in the past two weeks my "fails" have been that I have:

- thought I ordered Christmas gifts to be shipped to us, but upon not receiving them when expected, realized that I never actually paid in the checkout cart
- told Kelvin confidently that Blue Apron meals were coming last week when, in fact, I had the date wrong, leaving me confused on Monday when no box arrived, and us a bit short on meals/ groceries last week (as we usually shop for the week on Saturdays)
- lost my clinic ID badge temporarily (and asked my MA Jenn if she'd seen my "swipey thing" at my desk, to which she responded "You mean your badge?!"), when it was in my coat pocket the whole time
- almost went to Pepper's vet appointment without Pepper (I'd planned to pick up the kids from daycare between 3:30 and 3:45 and then go straight there, as the vet is right down the street), but instead I realized leaving the school that there was no dog in the car. I had to race home to collect Pepper and when I told Iver that he and Niall would have to stay in the car for 30 seconds in our driveway while I grabbed her as we were short on time, he told me that that wasn't allowed as it was "against the law."

It's amazing that I am still taking care of patients competently at work.

The above being said, I hope things are looking up soon. I blogged previously that we were doing better with Niall in the sleep department.  My NAIL is that, for TWO nights in a row (so I think it's more than a fluke), he has made it through the night without intervention/eating from 7 or 7:30 pm until 6:30 a.m. We actually slept in the guest room last night and apparently the webcam showed him waking at 3 a.m. for an indeterminate length of time, but neither of us heard him (If you don't hear your child wake in the night because you've decided to sleep elsewhere with the door shut but he does wake, does it count as him sleeping through??).  I'm always a bit nervous about my milk supply with dropping feedings, but I think the benefits for mood, memory, and, well, life, will be worth it!

"Look what I can do, Mom!" (Tying & Multiplying)

Iver is still three years old for another couple of weeks, and while he has given me a lot of gray hairs, tears, and many lost hours of sleep, he also amazes us with some of the things he can do/remember. Here is a definite mom-bragging post.

Below is a video of him tying some shoes I recently bought him, as he was asking for shoes with laces. We showed him basically once how to tie using "bunny ears," and then have left him to figure it out. We tried to discourage him from wearing these shoes to preschool, because we didn't want his teachers to have to re-tie them throughout the day if he had trouble, but we told him that if and oncehe could figure out how to tie them himself, he could wear them. This is where his persistence pays off (please pardon the fussing infant in the background-- this was just before we were out the door and Niall was strapped in his bucket carseat. And in case you're wondering about the ponytail, it was crazy hair day at preschool).

Iver also likes doing "math problems" like simple addition and subtraction to pass the time, like in the car. Here's him demonstrating some multiplication.

This boy is so intense and so stubborn, but he is so, so bright!  I can't believe he's almost FOUR!

Ho-Ho-Holidays

It's a busy time of year, in terms of social gatherings, family coming to town, gift-shopping/giving, and having a child whose birthday is four days before Christmas (who has apparently requested that his non-crafty/non-bakey mother make cake pops for his whole preschool class on the last day before their break). Despite my vows to keep it simple and to "say no" more often (this great article captures so well how I feel), I still find myself overwhelmed.

However, I really do cherish the Advent and the Christmas season. I love the music (Iver and I went to a Messiah Choral Arts Concert last weekend and, while squirmy, he managed to make it through). I love the holiday movies (It's a Wonderful Life and Love Actually are my favorites), although I doubt we'll watch any this year. I love Christmas lights (even though we had none--Kelvin initially declined to get some to put outside in the front of our house but then relented when I begged). I even enjoy decorating (a little).

I picked up a few new indoor decorations-- some from Etsy, and some from the local craft fair at Redwood Acres Fairgrounds last weekend.

The ceramic stocking holder is one my Grandmother painted.

Festive cushion covers

Elf stockings

These canvas prints, which Iver and I had fun making last year, are definitely some of my favorite items on display.

We decided not to put up a tree this year, as Niall is very much on the move and pulling up on everything.

Merry Holiday Season, from this very ready Santa!
