Santa Paws and Holiday Party

We braved the terribly cold, rainy weather on Saturday to participate in a few Christmasy activities.
First, we took some photos with 'Santa Paws' benefiting the Humboldt Animal Rescue Team.

Pepper lucked out with this bone!

Iver didn't want to sit on Santa's lap but was curious enough...

We then headed to the company Holiday Party (whose lasagna last year sent me into labor-- I had a newborn in my arms about seven hours after leaving the party!) with our almost-one-year-old!

Now...

... and then!

(Yes, this was the now-too-small newborn hat knit for Iver by one of my patients, but it's just so...festive. I had to bust it out!).

Here are some more "Santa Paws"-- my first (and probably last) attempt at DIY-Christmas-crafting with decorated salt dough ornaments made from Iver's hands and "paws." I am especially proud of the "glazed" one on the upper left.

Missing Daddy

Kelvin went on a quick jaunt to Orlando, FL this week for a conference.

While he was busy eating all-you-can-eat lobster and watching Magic Johnson speak (and perhaps getting 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep [can you tell I'm jealous?]), Kelvin's mom and I both had a heck of a time getting our little one (who apparently really was missing his Daddy!) to go to sleep and stay asleep at night!

Luckily, despite some terrible stormy weather here, Kelvin landed successfully around midnight on Wednesday (not without power outages in and around the airport!) and was finally able to coax Iver, who'd gone to bed at 8 p.m., awoken at 9:50 p.m., and who refused to go back to sleep in the crib.... back to sleep at 1:30 a.m., almost four hours later. Oof da.

Here's hoping that Daddy doesn't leave us alone too often... until we can get our little one to sleep through the night.  Mommy is obviously not capable of being a single parent!

Turkey day 2015

We had a nice Thanksgiving! Despite being on call, I didn't have to spend too much time in the hospital. We enjoyed a nice walk, some down time with a baby who napped successfully, football-watching, and great food at Bill and Marguerite's for dinner.

Despite the amazing food at Marguerite's, including turkey, duck, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, stuffing, carrot souffle, cranberry sauce, and delicious pies and crisps, Iver refused to eat more than three bites of food. I don't understand it. This picture looks like the "post-pigging-out" pose of many of us adults, but he wasn't remotely full, and woke up multiple times last night to tell us about it.
Suggestions for a baby who refuses to eat solids?

This year's "gift"

"What do you want for your birthday?" Kelvin asked me several weeks ago.

It wasn't actually a difficult question to answer. I've become fairly anti-stuff in the last couple of years. I don't like spending money (or having other people spend money for us) on *things* but prefer experiences.

What do I crave more than anything right now? Quiet time to myself and sleep.

The demands of an emotionally exhausting job, combined with parenting an active almost-one-year-old who has never slept though the night and my own introverted nature, has made me feel pretty depleted most day. So a "night away" it was.

Kelvin arranged for his parents to watch Iver overnight (so I should really thank my in-laws!) and made reservations for dinner for us at Larrupin Cafe in Trinidad, which is, I think, the best restaurant around these parts. We go there once or twice a year for special occasions.

The night continued with a hotel stay just five minutes from our house at the very comfortable Hampton Inn.

It was the first "date night" that he and I have had... since Iver was born (11 months is a long time!).

It was the first *night away* from baby that I've had ... since Iver was born (except for nights when I have been on call and have been at the hospital working with laboring mamas, if those count).

We ate.  I read a good chunk of a new good book (Tana French's Broken Harbor). We drank wine, I drank tea... and I slept. I conked out at around 9 p.m., awoke to pump around midnight (oh, if only I could have a night away from *that* activity), and then got up just before 8 a.m., when we got a call from K's parents regarding Iver having some (probably motrin-related) facial swelling. I woke up briefly a few times in the middle of the night, but didn't get out of bed, which was wonderful. Iver, besides the eye swelling, also did pretty well, only waking once at 2 a.m. and getting up at 5:45.  We came home a bit earlier than we planned, but it was still really relaxing!

Did I miss Iver? Yes, of course. I felt bad leaving him as he'd been a bit under the weather with URI symptoms (and then I felt bad for my in-laws for having to worry about his allergic reaction). However, I feel more rested than I have in months!  It was a great birthday.

11-month update!

Iver is one month shy of a year! He:

- probably weighs close to 18 lbs. At his second flu shot appointment around 10 months, he was 17#8 oz, and still holding at around the 9th percentile.
- is still exclusively on breastmilk as well as a variety of solids, although getting them in is challenging. He doesn't particularly like eating in his high chair, and it's often a fight to get more than a couple of bites in. He needs a lot of distraction. He prefers to feed himself. We try to give him milk in a cup during meals to boost his calories. His milk intake has gone down a bit during the day, leaving me with a bit of a freezer surplus (a good problem to have!). I'm still pumping but looking forward to backing down and eventually quitting (although it seems arbitrary to pick a "quit date" even though I know it's reasonable in the next few months. I'm not sure when he'll wean completely).
- now has six teeth -- 4 upper and two lower. He's chewed his crib rail pretty good, but hasn't been biting while nursing any more.

- poops pretty much every morning and pees regularly throughout the day on the baby potty over our toilet, although he's needing more distraction to stick with it; he's in mostly pocket cloth diapers during the day (changing him is a huge challenge!), and disposables (we love Pampers!) at night with one change.

- is a better sleeper. He goes to bed in his crib between 7:30 and 8 pm, and sometimes wakes around 12 or 1 a.m and fusses but we don't intervene. I only get up once to feed/change him around 1:30-2:30 a.m, and then he is waking around 5-5:30 a.m. (and can sometimes be coaxed back to sleep by Kelvin for another 30-45 min or so). He still naps twice a day for about an hour, but occasionally one nap will be as short as 30 min, and he is often a little bit impish in his crib.

- is still very adventurous. he has figured out how to lower himself down off the bed/couch rather than going head first. He can climb out of his living room gated "pen" by pulling himself up onto the sectional couch.  He will walk up our stairs holding onto the railing, rather than crawling. He is freestanding, and taking a few steps at a time. I think he's close to walking. We have put up a baby gate at the bottom of our stairs, and put drawer locks in the living room, baby proofing a little at a time. He still loves to pull on electrical cords. He loves crawling under chairs or into closets and hiding.

playing with the doorstop at church

- mimics our gestures and seems to understand some commands in both Vietnamese and English.
- makes a lot of noises including consonants and squeals, but I'm not sure they're purposeful or specific.
- loves other babies and children, and I think he'll do great at daycare in January.
-  is incredibly smiley and laughs frequently, when bounced, or when chased up the stairs

-  currently has his second cold of his first year, with copious clear snot (and bubbles that he pops), fever, and some vomiting. He hates having his nose wiped or sucked out with the Nose Frida.
- has one international (Ecuador) stamp in his passport and will be coming with us to Panama in the spring!
- loves to be outside, walking in the stroller/BOB or being carried forward-facing in the Lillebaby carrier, or swinging or going down slides at the neighborhood park. He likes dancing and playing with Pepper.

Four boys and their apples

We got our "December boy babies" together again this past weekend at Nina's. House.  My pictures aren't great (thankfully Nina took some more good ones!), but it was awesome to see these little guys (Alex, Ben, Levi, and Iver) crawling, cruising, chewing, and playing.

They all loved the apples/slices!

In the corner...

Nina had this awesome tube for crawling!

Standing is fun!

Iver and Ben are buds!

It's hard to believe they're almost ONE!

an "extra" hour?

Below are some graphics which well depict my thoughts on the "hour" we were supposed to gain last weekend. Granted, we were on the throes of a return to west-coast time from being anywhere from South America to Virginia in the preceeding week.

Between the time change 3 hours "back," and another hour "back," Iver has consistently been waking up between 4:45 and 5:30 am in the last 2 weeks since being home from our trip (I admit that it could be worse). He can sometimes be coaxed back to co-sleep next to one of us on the couch for another 30-60 minutes (Kelvin is far more successful at doing this than I am).  We had one night this week of a 7-hour stretch where I thought he hadn't woken up (apparently Kelvin's mom heard him, and we had drowned him out with our own bedroom's white noise) but the (lack-of) sleep struggles continue.   I have heard that some parents "gently" start to move the clock back, by 10-15 min for a few days before the "hour" of change.

We did not try this.
We might in the future.
This momma is still totally tired.

And this is my daily, nightly, every-nap-time-he-ever-takes battle:

Kelvin "naps when the baby naps."
I tend to pick "me" time, except when I'm totally spent.
You can guess who is the crankier parent :)
