It's Fall, which means.. sports galore!
Iver is again in the Mad River Youth Soccer League with Saturday games (some as early as 7:45 a.m.!). He knows some people on his team from school and, after one week of a bye, their team is 3-0. This year, in U-12 (under twelve), they play on a large field, which makes for less scoring, but it's still competitive! His team came from behind and won his last game 4-2. Many of his teammates also play on the (Club) Sequoia league, which we couldn't handle due to our schedules, but Iver seems happy to stay playing locally. Niall has opted out and sits (/mostly behaves) on the sidelines during games and practices.
Both kids are doing fall Cross Country again. We are thankful to have coach Kristin back to help, asshe no longer has kids in the school but is great at it! I'm definitely not up for coaching/wrangling and coordinating kids, but really like watching the races!
We were proud of Niall and his little legs (0.7 miles, 5:46).
Fuente 3-5th did great (here's Iver and bud Lucas coming in to the home stretch)
Iver (1.5 miles, 6:37, 2nd in 4th grade boys, 7th for 3-5th boys, and 10th overall).
Olivia ran 6:29, just beating out Iver!
The second meet was around Perigot Park in
Blue Lake.
This was a flat course with lovely weather that the kids loved!
Niall still insists on wearing pants because sometimes kids fall in a stampede at the beginning, even though I think he'd be hot!
He finished 0.8 miles in 7:57.
The joy (with Joan and Eimie, two first-grade buddies)
Iver got his revenge on friend Olivia with a great time (top six and first fourth grader), and Fuente swept the 1-3rd spots in the 1.5-mile race!
1 Juan Emilio Fuente Nueva Grade 5 7:55
2 Ian Sowerwine Fuente Nueva Grade 5 7:58
3 Lucas Johnson-Bazan Fuente N Grade 5 7:59
4 Alex Armstrong-Penney Trinidad Grade 5 8:02
5 Maverick Chamberlain New Life Grade 5 8:05
6 Iver Vu Fuente Nueva Grade 4 8:09
This past Tuesday, the kids ran the hilly course at
Redwood Park.
Niall improved a ton (supposedly with the aid of some hill race strategy advised by Kelvin)! He was the top first grade finisher with a time of 7:55 (in 1 mile), finishing ahead of friend Ivan and rival Carter.
The Fuente 3-5th crew again killed it in 1.5 miles!
1 Juan Emilio Fuente Nueva 5 10:11
2 Ian Sowerwine Fuente Nueva 5 10:28
3 Fila Parage Garfield 5 10:34
4 Trystan Cavanaugh Trinidad 4 10:58
5 Maverick Chamberlain New Life 5 11:00
6 Theo Cline Jacoby Creek 5 11:01
7 Alex Penney Trinidad 5 11:06
8 Lucas Bazan Fuente Nueva 5 11:09
9 Jules Davis Garfield 4 11:29
10 Jonah Hoffman Jacoby Creek 4 11:35
11 Iver Vu Fuente Nueva 4 11:37
Juan Emilio broke the 2-year-old record!.
Iver said he briefly took a wrong turn in the forest and also had some hip strain, slowing him down a bit but finished strong!
Olivia, an incredible athlete, eked out her second win over Iver (11:12).
Strong XC crew!
~0.8 miles (7:06, top four first grader boy!)
~1.2 miles (8:48), just ahead of Olivia but edged out by buddy Hudson.
I joined my work's "Walktober" program and have been training for an upcoming half marathon, enjoying the sunny fall weather. However, I wish my body recovered from my runs as well as these kids' do!
