Humboldt's Got Fun!

It's been a fun week in these parts!

On Saturday, we went to Bear River Casino for "Humboldt's Got Talent,"  a talent show (modeled after America's Got Talent) with a $2000 grand prize.

The Spellmeyers joined us. 

The show was really entertaining, with a lot of talented locals (mostly vocalists). The show was hosted by Tatanka Means, a Native American actor and comedian who has performed in films including the recently released "Killers of the Flower Moon."  We even got to witness the appearance and performance of  Eureka native Tori McConnell, Miss Indian World 2023, which was really special.  A bluegrass singer, Sequoia Rose, took home the grand prize, while tap dancer Caleb Williamson won People's Choice, and Bella Fire Dancer took home "Most Original."  However, due to a full week of torrential rain, the Hwy 101 that would take us home was flooded and closed, stranding many people south in Fortuna overnight (we thankfully escaped on a side, Tompkins Hill, Road, home to Pepper).

Kelvin hosted Bill H's retirement party on Sunday. Bill has been a local family physician (and musical, guitar-playing) legend, heading Open Door as CMO since the 90s after her moved up from Garberville/Redway and retiring around age 75 (he's exactly thirty-four years older than Kelvin!).  Although my introverted mostly un-fun self was eager to leave once the singing/dancing started, I enjoyed some of the chit-chat with other physicians and hearing the touching speeches from Bill's colleagues and family.

The kids were off school on MLK day (while I had to take OB call). Kelvin took them to Harbor Lanes to bowl, where Niall apparently won! 

The Harlem Globetrotters made another appearance at Cal Poly, and we joined what seemed like half of our county there on Wednesday night for a highly entertaining "game"/show between them and the Generals (Iver and Kelvin had gone previously in 2022).
