Kelvin found out that Trevor Noah, a hilarious comedian we adore, was going to be on tour in San Francisco this weekend, and so he planned a getaway for us as a late celebration of my birthday last month. He enlisted amazing babysitter Gloria to watch the kids (they had a blast!) and we enjoyed the drive down on Saturday, without anyone demanding snacks every 5 minutes!
Wings for lunch in Santa Rosa
We stayed with Serena and Brad in Berkeley, and they took us to a wonderful wine bar in SF, Ungrafted, to try their favorites (the food plates, including Hangar Steaks, scallops, and other small bites were also all truly delicious. And now Kelvin is eager to go to a Michelin star restaurant with them on another future weekend trip).
Serena and Brad dropped us off at the Masonic Auditorium in time for the show while they went home to pack for an upcoming trip. The show was hilarious and amazing (although no photos of the performers were allowed).
The city lights were also really pretty (but city driving and traffic is incredibly stressful to us rural folks!)
Kelvin coordinated brunch on Sunday with friends (Mai/Andrew and girls and Kieu and Jimmy) who live in San Jose, to add to our weekend plans!
Delicious Dim Sum at Koi Palace
We then headed to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara (closer to San Jose than SF) to catch a San Francisco Forty-Niners football game (vs. their rival team the Seattle Seahawks), which was a real treat! Kelvin and I (along with the Lees) have attended one other NFL game, a 49ers matchup with the Colts back in 2013 in the last season at Candlestick Park (where the Niners lost). Kieu and Jimmy joined us this time, and this game (& outcome) was much better!
We were sitting right in front of some vocal Seahawks fans, which was a bit annoying in the first half, which was pretty competitive. Equally (if not more) annoying and also behind us was an older woman, attending the game by herself and sort of taunting said Seahawks fans, all the while yelling repeatedly "PURDY TO KITTLE, OVER THE MIDDLE!" for three-plus quarters (until the QB, Brock Purdy, did just that, throwing to tight end George Kittle. She did quiet down a bit after that).
This woman also accused Kieu/Jimmy (in blue) of being Seahawks fans, since they weren't quite as vocal as we were in cheering for our team (but they sure are not Seattle fans).
SF thankfully lit up the offense in the second half, with Deebo Samuel scoring several times, and it was a great game to watch (final score was 28-16, bringing their record to 10-3 and putting them atop the other teams in the NFC West. They have a real Superbowl shot with their combination of great offense and defense!).
The W!
It was really challenging to get out of the overpacked stadium (LONG LINES to even get on the BART), and two hours after the game ended (and one unplanned Uber ride later), we were back at Kieu and Jimmy's place.
Then Kelvin and I faced a pretty tiring six-hour drive home (Kelvin napped during the first portion while I drove, and then when I started getting sleepy after a couple of hours, he drove the rest of the way). We got home around midnight and were up by 5:30 to start the workday (me on call-- with 2 births so far in the first 12 hours of my 24-hour call), but the weekend was full of the best kind of treats, and the (very quick) trip was totally worth it!
