Little Fishy

Iver spent quite a lot of time in various pools this summer during our brief travels. I have been wanting to get him into swim lessons for some time but felt a bit reluctant due to COVID, Delta, etc. However, last month I  started calling around to local pools about availability of private lessons. With kids' vaccines still looking like a ways off (and despite our local Delta wave), we just bit the bullet and figured that thirty minute one-on-one lessons with a vaccinated instructor weren't adding too much to his individual risk of COVID/needing quarantining, etc. The longer this pandemic drags on due to people unwilling to get vaccinated, the more sad I am for my kids and ultimately have been feeling more and more that  it's time to move on (slowly) to allow the kids some semblance of normal activities/life when we feel the activity is important, despite the small risks of illness/disruption in school and childcare (Iver's school just started offering extended day care last week).

Saturday was his first lesson at The Club, a relatively new (although it was shut down for most of 2020) fitness center just a few minutes from our house.  Iver (somewhat surprising to us, as he's a cautious and sometimes shy kid by nature) was eager to jump in (he wore the goggles but obviously took off his mask to swim) and participated fully, willing, and happily with the half-hour lesson with the instructor.  He learned to kick his legs with a kickboard, hold his breath, and jump forward. 

His younger brother, who is far less anxious about *new* activities, whined "I WANNA DO SWIM LESSONS, TOO!" and longingly looked on, poolside. 

We booked a ten-pack and hope that Iver will be more comfortable in the water by the end of this fall (we hope to be able to go on a beach/resort vacation in 2022 with my family where being able to swim will be important and allow for much more fun!). We may add his brother on a few sessions from now but we're feeling good about this choice and our little fishy loved the experience, too!
