Poop (potty training) in the time of Corona

(WARNING, graphic picture in this post).

Despite working in the clinic and hospital during the week (doing many outpatient tele-health visits but still busy on L&D) and the kids still attending their daycare, we have taken the "social [really physical] distancing" and shelter-in-place order seriously on the weekends and these kiddos have gone nowhere else in a few weeks.

Niall (25 months) has been pretty good at pooping on the potty in the mornings and sometimes after dinner for some time, but we decided that it was a reasonable time now to try out potty training since we are pretty much home-bound! We use cloth diapers at home and school and laundry can be burdensome, so I'd love to have our second (and last) child out of diapers as soon as possible!

For the living room, Kelvin busted out the giant tarp that I believe we used to protect our carpets with Iver when he was just about two (and, despite many other battles he has fought in his lifetime, potty training was not one of them and Iver was in undies shortly after two without much of a fuss).  We also put a small Baby Bjorn potty in the corner of our dining room nearby to the main play area.  The padded trainer-type underwear seem to give Niall a false sense of security (too similar to a diaper in absorbency), so we've found that either having him in regular undies alone (without pants over them) or naked have been the easiest to encourage him to either use this corner potty or the actual toilet to do his business either at his choosing, or on about a 40-minute schedule.

On the first Monday back to school after we started "training," he got a shout-out for telling the teacher twice that he had to poop on the potty!

… but then, today, we had a slightly different situation in which Niall was running to the bathroom (telling us he had to go!), and, in Kelvin's haste to pull off the undies, a big chunk of poop got flung out of the underwear onto the floor (and bathroom door!).  A similar occurrence happened last weekend, when a nugget also fell out of his underwear en route to the bathroom and when I asked him if it was his or Pepper's (Pepper has also been a bit anxious lately and had a few accidents), Niall proudly stated, "MY poop!"

Since it's looking like many more weeks-months of indoor time, we hope to have ongoing improvements in the poop department here. Wish us luck!
