Our refrigerator broke the week before we went out of town for Thanksgiving. One evening, Kelvin went to get something out and realized that things were just not cold. It wasn't the end of the world, because, while we were sad to lose some fridge staples that we just couldn't salvage (but which, knowing my style, were probably old and needed throwing-out anyway), we were going to be out of town for the following week and thus didn't have a ton of food stored.
The previous owners of this house also had left their mini-fridge (which is housed in our garage and usually just houses drinks), so we were able to transfer some goods out there (and keep some things there now). We also have a chest freezer (which was originally bought for breastmilk) so we have a good place to store frozen goods. Although we had to throw out some melted ice cream, we are doing ok.
The good news is that apparently repairs for this existing six-year-old fridge may be under a warranty (whose cost was split between us and the previous owners), since we've only owned and been in the house five months.
The bad news is that, because we live in a rural area (and because everything has to go through the warranty company), there aren't many options and there is limited availability for fridge-repair services. The first date the "fridge fixers" could come out was last week (when we were out of town). However, our gracious friends and house-sitters Kelly and Matt still stayed at our place (despite not having a working main fridge!) and were able to let in the first repai guy.
He wasn't entirely sure of the problem after his time at our place. The warranty company then had to contact a second company; however, they weren't able to come out until today (more than a week after the first evaluation). Apparently, the latest guy thinks that the problem is that there is an air compressor leak (or something like that... I'm not very mechanically-savvy), which he estimated has about a 30% chance of being fixable (but repair of which the warranty company wants to pursue). The plan is for this company to take the fridge to their shop to run dye and things through the system to find the leak (if there), which takes another 5-7 business days. They (naturally) couldn't take the fridge today (after this decision was made), but had to schedule that pick-up for another date in the future.
We both work. It's hard to be here for a 4-hour window when the repair person "may" stop by.
Now it's dragging on two weeks.
We may be fridge-less for another two (or more).
And then, after all of this fridge-less pain, we may have to just buy a new fridge.
So if anyone local has a spare (mini) fridge to lend us for a short while, we would take you up on it!
(And fridge brands/model suggestions are welcome in case we just need to buy a new one. The repair guy today mentioned that he thought the brands of Whirlpool and KitchenAid are good. We are first-time fridge buyers! Ah, the joys of home ownership.)

Ugh - what a pain to have your fridge conk out like that. KitchenAid and Whirlpool are definitely great brands and should last you a long time. One brand I do NOT recommend is LG. We bought a brand new LG fridge for our wedding. About 2-3 years after we bought it, it stopped working. The repair guy told us we were lucky we had called that day because there was a FIRE in the back of the freezer section where the wires had melted through. Had we waited another day, the fire would have spread to the wall of the house. He also mentioned that LG has had a history of problems so he didn't recommend buying that brand (he did recommend KitchenAid/Whirlpool). We currently have a Samsung and like it a lot.
