It's Morphin' Time! (Niall is six!)

Our littlest guy is SIX!

Niall is still pretty tiny-- smaller than most of the kids in his Kindergarten class. He's about 3 ft. 6 inches and about 35 lbs, but we'll officially take him in for a well visit in a couple of weeks (wanting to make sure his petite height is not a medical concern).  He's in mostly 4T clothing, and size 9 shoes. He still likes skinny pants and joggers, usually rotating his favorite camouflage pants from Target. He still loves zip-up hoodies and his dino onesie pajamas to be cozy. He is thriving in his first year at Spanish immersion elementary school, where he comes home singing Spanish songs, with "arte" creations made out of recyclable boxes/supplies. He gets along well with the other kids and teachers and has made some good new friends.

He still is our little "vegetarian that doesn't love vegetables." He recently discovered that beef comes from cows ("They just take the cow and chop it up?!"), but is not vegetarian for ethical reasons.  He will eat processed meats like bacon, sometimes chicken (mostly in nugget form), and pho meatballs but for protein, he favors the whites of hard-boiled eggs and tofu.  He likes cucumbers, peas, carrots, and sometimes olives, but it's hard to get fiber in him.  Strawberries are his favorite fruit but also likes blueberries, mango, nectarines, and kiwis.  He likes noodles and soups, as well as rice and cheese. He likes chocolate treats. With recent events, we have to watch his cheese and milk consumption, and it's hard to sneak in powdered fiber or Miralax as he doesn't really like juice or smoothies. Sigh. We hope the pickiness gets better with time.

He still remains a good sleeper, sometimes making it past 7 a.m. on weekends, and often going to bed on his own when he feels tired, which is very unlike our fear-of-missing-out kiddo, Iver! He sleeps in a full bed next to Iver's bed in a shared room, but sometimes wanders out into our room when he's "scared" (or maybe cold), really loving to snuggle with adults. He's very attached to a small "blue blanky" and has a larger "blue blanky" he got as Christmas gift from Santa.

He still loves being read to, but is starting to sound out words (he can recognize all his classmates' names by sight) and we've done some of the early reading "Bob Books". He has great vocabulary and says things like, "Don't retaliate!" or "That malfunctioned!"  He can do simple math.  He is very curious about writing all things (thankfully not swear words these days, as he got in trouble at preK once for teaching some other kids how to write the F-word). He likes to sing in the car and has good pitch!  He likes to watch cartoons on the weekends, including "How to Train Your Dragon" and still is into Superheroes and Power Rangers.

He recently figured out how to ride a two-wheeler bike, and, while he is still working on starting the motion on his own, we're thrilled he's gotten this down, as he's not as sports-motivated as his brother and it's been a challenge!  He did participate in fall cross country (and I watched him run a mile on his own!) and seems to want to do spring track, but still is not the most energetic on weekend walks or hikes. He's enrolled in group swim lessons now, and has moved up a couple of levels over the last couple of months.

He loves making crafts with papers (including origami, cards, and folded creations) and boxes, as well as building. He put together a ~1400 lego set recently with hardly any assistance and seems to have a great spatial brain (something which I do NOT share!). He enjoys doing Little Passports kits with me and playing board games (while we're working on playing by the *real* rules and not rage-quitting).  He's generally a very even-tempered, sweet and happy kid.

We hosted a birthday party for him on Saturday, where he invited a handful of friends over for a Power Rangers-themed bash.

Kelvin inflated some helium balloons which got beat down pretty quickly!

These elementary school years are sweet and quite enjoyable for us. Although he's still tiny, he acts like a "big kid." Happy sixth, smiley Niall-y!

Faithful! (but a bit short)

The San Francisco 49ers were NFC Champions and made it to the Super Bowl this year! While I sort off fell off the football-watching bandwagon during the pandemic, Kelvin has truly been "Faithful," and I joined him in cheering for our NorCal team this year, who were quite good!  We were lucky to catch a good live game back at Levi's Stadium in December  when they played their rival Seahawks, and while they looked pretty shaky at the end of the regular season (against the Ravens on Christmas), we watched with held breath as they miraculously pulled of some playoff wins (that probably should have gone to the other team!) against the Packers and Lions.  We're a fan of Brock Purdy (what an incredible story of a last [262nd in 2022] draft pick underdog "Mr. Irrelevant" leading his team to the NFC Championship!), as well as Christian McCaffrey ("CMC"), and receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

The last time the Niners were in the Super Bowl was in 2020, when they (again!) had a loss (I wished I'd been a fan in the eighties and nineties).  We last hosted a gathering at our house (of any kind, I think!) in 2017 for a Super Bowl Party featuring another Tom Brady comeback against the Falcons. But this year, despite hosting a home kiddie birthday party for Niall the day before, I agreed to host for our good friends, who I shamelessly recruited to bring food, as the most stressful part of hosting for me is preparing enough food and feeling confident I wouldn't poison anyone with my cooking (I think we had close to 30 people inside our house and watching outside on the deck, including kids)!  We were anxious to see the Niners face the champion Chiefs, led by sure-to-be future Hall of Famer and clutch QB Patrick Mahomes, and in-the-news Travis Kelce, boyfriend to Person of the Year and star musician Taylor Swift.

I only set one towel on fire cooking!

Gavin came early to watch the pre-game show and to help Kelvin with outside set up.

Niall was still a bit grumpy with lingering belly pain.

Sara and Brenda, although (sort of) rooting for the Chiefs, graciously came early to help set up. Sara fried many wings for us, and Brenda made a bean dip.

(and Sara's doggie, Wally, who even had a KC shirt on!)

Beth (a Green Bay fan) and Pat (a Seahawks fan) were reluctant to attend but made it through a half with cheering 49ers fans, since they were rooting for the Chiefs as well.

Shannon made so much yummy food (bacon-jalapeno poppers, mini wraps, buffalo dip).

During commercial breaks, Iver read football trivia questions that Kelvin had prepared.

Eleven-year-old Gavin took home the trophy for most correct answers! We also had a "most spirited" award, which went to kid Kira, who had dyed her hair streaked red for the occasion (but who we didn't get to photograph!).

It was a really close (but pretty low-scoring) game, in which the 49ers led for the majority!   They played good first-half defense against the Chiefs, but had a hard time scoring TDs in when it counted (their kicker also AGAIN missed a point-after kick, which is just embarrassing, although he strikingly made two very long FGs for some redemption). When the game went to overtime, the Niners only were able to net a field goal, but Mahomes put together a game-winning drive to win it with a TD (final score: 25-22).

"The Faithful" group who stayed until the end.

We had a great time hosting and watching a great football game and clean up wasn't too bad.  With hope, "our team" will be back strong for for Super Bowl contending next year. I think I could be convinced to host again. Bang! Bang! Niner Gang!

Ailing tummies and paws

It's been a rough health week this week in these parts!

Pepper (almost 13.5) woke up on Sunday unable to put weight on her left hind leg. There was no obvious injury or skin findings and we were really concerned about her. We've heard of dogs tearing ligaments and (not being inclined to have her have any major surgery) worried if that would be... it for her.  She has all kinds of "old lady problems," including being deaf and partially blind, and doesn't walk very far at baseline due to arthritis. She also needs a fiber supplement to keep her regular!  She is on prednisone, which can cause all kinds of problems including bone fragility as well as infections.  We feared the worst and having to carry her up/down steps to go potty outside or across the house to eat/drink didn't seem to be a good set-up or sustainable long-term solution for decent quality of life (both eating and going to the bathroom are hard with only three limbs). We were thinking about if we'd have to track down the urn I bought a couple of years ago when she was really sick. (Kelvin recently learned that the mean lifespan of her breed is about 13.2 years).  We hugged and kissed her a lot and took a bunch of photos.

Eating, where it's hard to balance

However, Kelvin was lucky to get a Monday squeeze vet appointment in the afternoon and we were relieved to find out that she seems to have developed cellulitis and an abscess in her paw, which was making it painful for her to walk. It wasn't very apparent on Sunday through her fur. However, the vet techs shaved her hair, and treatment with warm soaks and oral antibiotics has helped immensely in just two days.

Niall was also ailing a bit, complaining of belly pain on Sunday and Monday but was acting normally. Nevertheless, on Tuesday, he woke up unable to move and holding his stomach. Since starting kinder, he is in charge of his own bathroom tasks, so I actually don't know how regularly he poops (or if he poops at school?) but he, not a huge lover of vegetables and liking "white" food, has struggled a bit with constipation over the years. We kept him home from school Tuesday (although he perked up midday) and I tried to get as much fiber and fluids in him as was possible. He didn't love the taste of fiber chews I got, ate some fruit, and didn't like the juice-Miralax cocktail I mixed. Even a glycerin suppository didn't solve his problem.

                                                          check out our counter-pharmacy situation!

He woke up multiple times crying in the night, but still no other symptoms (no vomiting) despite the acute pain. Kelvin was more worried than I was (because he remembers how I minimized his symptoms in 2022 when he had acute appendicitis-- not uncommon for me!) and pushed to get N seen at the acute care clinic and a prompt ultrasound, which saved us so much time, waiting, and an ER visit, which we have always avoided because our feeling is that you actually have to be dying or need surgery to go to a hospital (in any circumstance outside of childbirth). We're thankful for our medical knowledge (which allows us to mostly diagnose our kids/selves without having to go to doctors' appointments), as well as community connections, even thought the knowledge doesn't always serve us that well due to my "normalcy" bias and tendency to not freak out about health things (any other parent would probably have brought their kid to the ER based on how Niall was acting on Tuesday night).

Thankfully, the ultrasound did not suggest intraabdominal fluid nor appendicitis, and showed some stool and prominent lymph nodes... but Niall is back to his feisty, happy self this morning.   I still don't know if and when he poops, but "FOS" as we call it in the medical world is not the worst ailment to have. And I was right this time. Childhood constipation is far more likely that acute surgical emergencies, after all.  Sigh. If only vegetables tasted like cheese. But we're glad everyone is on the mend.

Elk Prairie Stroll

We have continued to have seriously wet and rainy days up here on the North Coast. We got a one-day weekend Saturday reprieve from downpours and decided to drive north to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park (about 45 minutes away), which usually (at least in past years) has had a first-Saturday-of-the-month road closure to allow pedestrians and bikes to take over a section of Newton B. Drury Parkway.

The main park road wasn't, in fact, closed when we got up there, but we still parked by Elk Prairie Campground and enjoyed viewing the many elk near Elk Prairie Campground and the kids (Niall, a fairly new bike rider!) were able to ride along the paths on their two-wheelers.

It was so nice to see the sun through the mist and very restorative to get some good peaceful nature time in!

Deer on a trail

Niall, proud of his camera skills, took this one!

Pretending to like one another (there was a LOT of squabbling this morning before and after this picture)

It's back to a rain-filled forecast tomorrow. We have to take advantage of the winter sun when we can!
