My One Wild and Precious Life

Despite my love of the written word, I have never read much or been engaged by poetry; however, I have heard the name Mary Oliver, and checked one one anthology of hers form the local library. Here are some of my favorite words (to date) from her about wisdom (along with the above famous line, from her poem "The Summer Day").

THE SWIMMING LESSON

Feeling the icy kick, the endless waves
Reaching around my life, I moved my arms
And coughed, and in the end saw land.

Somebody, I suppose,
Remembering the medieval maxim,
Had tossed me in,
Had wanted me to learn to swim,

Not knowing that none of us, who ever came back
From that long lonely fall and frenzied rising,
Ever learned anything at all
About swimming, but only
How to put off, one by one,
Dreams and pity, love and grace, --
How to survive in any place.

A DREAM OF TREES

There is a thing in me that dreamed of trees,
A quiet house, some green and modest acres
A little way from every troubling town,
A little way from factories, schools, laments.
I would have time, I thought, and time to spare,
With only streams and birds for company,
To build out of my life a few wild stanzas.
And then it came to me, that so was death,
A little way away from everywhere.

There is a thing in me still dreams of trees.
But let it go. Homesick for moderation,
Half the world’s artists shrink or fall away.
If any find solution, let him tell it.
Meanwhile I bend my heart toward lamentation
Where, as the times implore our true involvement,
The blades of every crisis point the way.

I would it were not so, but so it is.
Who ever made music of a mild day?

THE JOURNEY

One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice—
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do—
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Junior Journalist?

Niall gets bored at church and apparently this is what he "does," copying the local journal (North Coast Journal."

He chronicled the December earthquake and tsunami alert...

..., and more recently the LA wildfires, which have us thinking of Kelvin's family.

(Everyone is safe in OC and Katherine/August in LA county are not under evacuation alert).
Journalism, prayers and rain are good!

Blog inaug

WELCOME!!! This will be my first blog ever on my own site! I have been inspired by my wonderful friend Wendi, an all-star blogger and great all-around gal, to start a site to keep you all updated on all (well, most) of the happenings of my fairly-dull life. As I will be travelling a lot in the next few months on interviews (and visiting some of you!) and think it may be hard to keep as close in contact through e-mail and phone calls, I thought that you could tune in here to see how the residency interview trail is panning out... and catch some fun photos and tales along the way.
Prior to my starting this blog, I already committed to doing a weekly guest-blog for Wendi on "Where's Tara now?" during this busy time of travel. And she mentioned she wouldn't link me to her page (:() until after that season is all over. So I'm depending on independent readership here! I only aspire to be as witty and amusing as she is, so I will do my best to entertain you. I don't know how diligent I will be about updating frequently, as there are other things to be done soon (i.e. studying for step2, movie-watching, general playing, etc....), but I will surely try to post something on anything I think noteworthy! I am also quite technologically-challenged, which is why this is quite a big step for me! I'm sure I will be asking many of you techies for assistance along the way.... Anyway, please pass on any suggestions and comments of anything you'd like to hear about! I can't wait to hear from you!
Love and blessings,
Tara
