After we landed in the U.S. on Saturday, I started seeing beautiful photos posted on FB from friends in local Humboldt County of the beautiful northern lights FROM CALIFORNIA.
I know people travel up north and to places like Iceland and Norway (often in winter-BRR), hoping for clear days and to see the Aurora Borealis, but I'm not super keen on spending thousands of dollars to hope for clear weather for a glimpse, although it would be a really cool thing to see.

Lots of local (professional) photographers also captured the beautiful phenomenon, which apparently was more easily seen via phone camera than to the naked eye. I guess people were alerted that a solar storm was coming... (even if in town, I'm not sure I would been clued in enough to know to look for it, OR that I could have stayed up late enough to try).

Hoping there would be a repeat event on Saturday, I took out my camera and caught this lovely foggy Humboldt sky :) 
I'm not sure we could, in my lifetime, expect more Aurora locally, but it sure seemed breathtakingly special for those who got a glimpse!
