Redwood Forest Muddy Run

Due to travel and "life," we hadn't participated in other Six Rivers Running Club events since December in Blue Lake. This weekend, Iver (and Kelvin) were joined by adult and kid friends for a rainy (but not as rainy as one Arcata Bottoms run) few miles in the mud of the Arcata Community Forest (which has very hilly trails!).

Kelvin took one for the team and pushed the Bob running stroller with Niall during our last race (which is tiring!) and this wasn't a stroller-friendly course, so he decided to do the run while I watched N. Turns out that the weather wasn't super nice (rainy although not a downpour) so my fair-weather-running and middle-aged-injury-averse self was happy to stay at the base with my waterproof boots and electric hand warmer while the hard-core runners braved the puddles and muck to run a few miles in forty-degree temps.

Kelvin, Shannon, Brian, Paige, Beth (the blue tag crew ran 5.5 miles)

Sophia, Olivia, Iver, Hudson

The 5.5 milers started off first at 9:30 followed by the two-mile crew at 9:45.

Xander a fellow second-grader that is in Sunday school with Iver, was the second place finisher in the two-mile event at ~17 min!

 2 Xander E                M08   17:53    716

 3 Kelvin V                M40   19:39    774

 4 Olivia S                F07   20:52    712

 5 Iver V                  M08   20:55    773

 6 Hudson                  M07   20:56    711

 8 Sophia S                F10   23:50    776

 9 Beth S                  F39   23:54    775

Kelvin was next and came into the finish line missing two of his shoe soles, as he'd worn 20-year-old runners to spare his "nice" running shoes from getting too muddy!
(I think he may be having second thoughts and is not a fan of "barefoot" running!).

Olivia was next, finishing strong just ahead of the other two boys. She and Xander are classmates, topped the local cross country Championship podiums last fall.

(the time on the left is for the two-mile event)

We stuck around with snacks and water to watch our friends finish the 5.5 mile course.

Jenna, whose birthday it was, came in in under an hour.

Shannon and Brian, the power couple, finished together.

Paige, a LL teacher and mom of a toddler, also finished with a smile!

I was proud of the kids and the adults! Running sole-less had got to be uncomfortable for Kelvin, and the muddy, hilly conditions were a challenge for all. I'm considering a May Mother's Day race and we'll see if Iver is up for five miles (and, with hope, we get SUN!)!
