Now that our house is 75% COVID-vaccinated (near herd immunity [?!], which is slightly higher than our county’s percentage as of last week at 68% fully [6% partially]), we are so excited to be able to feel more comfortable going to community events and make plans. The local theater scene has been heating up, and Main Stage Humboldt put on a largely children's production of Pippi Longstocking (the musical) this past weekend at the Arkley Performing Arts Center in Eureka. The company required proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test (within 72 hours) to attend and masks were also required of the audience members as it was an indoor event, which felt really responsible and safe.
I remember reading Pippi books as a child, but my children haven't (yet). Despite not knowing the storyline/characters and having been shut out of events for most of the last two years (excepting a much-postponed Junie B. Jones for Iver in October), the kids did quite well during the ~2-hour (with intermission) performance from our balcony seats (although not without some attempted balcony-climbing from the toddler). While Niall also seemed frustrated/confused by some of the adults changing costumes/characters ("Hey! That guy [Pippi's Dad] was the Strongman!") and kept up a bit of chatter during the performance as is his usual (he also called the lead character “Pee-pee"), they (and we) really enjoyed watching the live performance and recognized some of the local kids from other musicals we've attended over the years. The actors all wore plastic mouth-shields (like partial face shields) as an added safety precaution for one another, as many were under twelve and thus not quite yet eligible to be fully vaccinated, but their voices projected very well and clearly to the audience.
The Main Stage Company has additional musicals coming up in the spring (Wizard of Oz) and summer (Sound of Music) which we'd love to attend. Yay for live theater and the performing arts coming back (safely)!
