Olympic Spirit

The Tokyo Olympics are here!   I am a huge Olympics fan and was devastated in 2020 when the games were cancelled/postponed. I have been watching Summer Olympics faithfully (even before binge-watching was an actual term) since about 1992, and was in Tokyo in 2016 when the 2020 games were already being advertised.

There is still a lot of controversy, more than a year into the pandemic, about whether the games in Tokyo should have been held at all. I'm glad I don't have to be in charge of making such a huge decision or in charge of COVID protocols for the games. Japan has prohibited international spectators, and I feel so sad for so many parents not able to be there in person to cheer on their children in one of their lifetime achievements, and for those athletes that may have missed or will miss out on a lifelong dream (for others, like many women who became mothers in 2020, a year's delay brought a silver lining opportunity).  And I sincerely hope and pray that there isn't a marked rise in disease morbidity/mortality for those not yet fortunate enough to have been vaccinated or strain on health care systems resulting from such a large-scale sporting event.

Nevertheless, I must say that I'm thrilled to be able to appreciate the ("Pandemic") Games (from the comfort of my home) this year more than ever (and Olympics-related screen time does not count as screen time in this house. I am excited to share the sports-viewing and excitement with my kids this year!). Sport of the highest quality that brings the world together is a true treat to witness for me, a lover of athletics and travel. The stories of competition, triumph, and sportsmanship truly show off the best of the human experience.

After a year and a half of the suffering and trauma we have all collectively gone through, this is something hopeful that the world truly needs right now. Let the Games go on!
