Niall's 5-month update

 

Our little guy is five months old today! At 5 months, he:

- probably weighs close to 15 lbs, more than doubling his birth weight; he feels chunky to me (and my back is suffering from lugging him around!) although he hasn't been weighed since his four month well child check

- still has big, gray eyes, dimples, and a great smile/laugh

- nurses and chugs bottles of breast milk like a champ

- still requires burping and spits up frequently

- is in cloth diapers during the day and size two Pampers at night, with frequent morning poop explosions (we'll try to start sitting him on the baby potty soon to cut down on our laundry)

- wears 3-6 and 6-month clothing

- is a strong roller! He started to roll back-to-front around 4.5 months (his preferred direction), but can roll both ways. He wiggles his arms and legs when on his stomach as if he's trying to crawl.

- still loves getting his diaper changed, although his interest in rolling makes this difficult   

- likes to be walked around front-facing in the carrier and stroller and will do a few minutes in the jumperoo; we just added the space-saver high-chair to our dining table so that he can sit while we eat rather than be held on our laps

- sleeps in a crib in our bedroom at night. We are working on some gentle sleep training (we don't really have anywhere besides next to us where he can "cry it out," which is hard!). He is capable of going a 6-hour stretch but also sometimes wakes 3 or more times.  He usually goes to bed pretty easily around 8 p.m. but recently has been waking at 11:30 pm or midnight, 2 a.m, and 5-6 a.m.  Kelvin has been "manning" the first waking (sometimes with a pacifier and sometimes with progressive waiting for comfort) and I feed him only after 1:30 a.m. We may be able to do more training when we can hide out in the guest room (after my MIL returns home in a couple months) so that we get on a path of consistently getting more than 2-3 consecutive hours of sleep in a row sometime soon (and to not have a repeat of Iver's first two years. He is already a better sleeper than I recall Iver being, and last night, which was a but of an anomaly, he woke only once, at 3 a.m., to eat! Yes!).

- naps about three times-- mid-morning, midday, and sometimes a short one around 5:30 pm, although sometimes they are catnaps (less than 45 minutes); they're longer (1-2 hours) when he doesn't sleep well at night and sometimes the evening nap is a total fail

- loves his big brother, and giggles at his antics

- loves his hands/fingers and sucks or chews on them constantly. He's very drooly but I haven't seen or felt any teeth buds yet

- squeals, coos, "talks," and is a very even-tempered, happy baby!
