Kelvin and I have gone to several Center Arts performances through HSU's program over the years, including an acrobatic show, Blue Man Group, comedian Demetri Martin, and a Canadian Brass Holiday concert. However, planning for a "night out" with (now two) kids' bedtimes to juggle (with one child somewhat rigid and sensitive to changes in routine) and without a deep babysitting pool from which to draw child-minders has been logistically difficult, so we hadn't been to any concerts or shows in a while.
When a few months back, Kelvin saw that Home Free, a Minneapolis-based country a cappella group (the only one, they claim) and a group we watched win NBC's a cappella Sing-Off in 2013, was coming to Eureka, we decided to make a (school) night out work! Thankfully, Gloria, one of Iver's former toddler room teachers and favorites was available to watch the boys, and we knew they'd be in excellent good hands (no one even cried when we left the house!).
Lori and Craig joined us for a Tuesday double date at Eureka's Arkley Center for the Performing Arts, and it was an entertaining and relaxing (free from children's interruptions!) night of enjoying the men's harmony and renditions of great country tunes including Rascal Flatts' "Life is a Highway," Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," Shakira's "Try Anything" ("The Zootopia Song!" the mom in me exclaimed), some original songs, and beatboxing solos by the amazingly talented vocal percussionist of the group. It was an amusing, toe-tapping, and really enjoyable show all around.
Goofing around
We returned home to find a quiet, peaceful house (the boys thankfully didn't give Gloria a hard time going to sleep), and we were really Home Free (to enjoy a bit more quiet time before our own bedtime). Weekday date night success! If you are a country and/or a cappella music fan, I'd highly recommend you check out this group (on iTunes, via their albums, or, better, in person) if you have the chance. I'm still shocked that a group of their following [over a quarter billion youtube hits] made it to our little neck of the woods in rural Northern California!
